WORLD FIRST FOR BUX CORRUGATED

Press Release

October, 2002; Bux Corrugated, in conjunction with Omega-Intercept and Engineered Materials, Inc. has developed the world's first liquid-based anticorrosion and ESD packaging coating, which is set to completely revolutionise the way many products are packaged in the future.

The printer-slotter applied Intercept MAX coating is a copper particle based liquid which, when applied to the inside lining of any form of corrugated packaging, acts like a solid sheet of highly reactive metal. This provides the ultimate corrosion and electrostatic discharge protection for the contents for at least five years.

Developed originally in a plastic and powder form by Bell Labs to provide permanent ESD and corrosion protection for sensitive electronics and telecommunications equipment, Intercept MAX coating acts as a barrier, creating a micro-chamber and preventing atmospheric gases that cause corrosion and tarnish from entering the packaging. It also acts as a preferential corrosion site, attracting gases trapped within a container to the Intercept coating, causing a reaction that leave the gases permanently neutralised.

Melvyn Mabbutt, Managing Director at Bux Corrugated explains: "Intercept MAX is a massive step forward in packaging. It means that virtually any products can be packed and stored in corrugated and board containers for long periods of time with no fear of corrosion or perishing".

"Intercept MAX has been developed principally for packaging for the electronics market to prevent solder rust in printed circuit boards and provide protection against electro-static discharge, the silent killer of electronics and computers."

"It is a very strong alternative to conventional volatile corrosion inhibitors in that it is non-hazardous, non-toxic, non-polluting and bio-degradable, and is an effective passive bactericide, mildewicide and fungicide. In addition, any corrugated packaging coated with Intercept MAX remains recyclable."

Patrick Treves, Managing Director of Omega-Intercept adds: "The long life span of Intercept MAX ensures that products can be put into storage for long periods of time without adverse effect. This is of particular benefit to companies who need to store electronic components, but it can also provide anticorrosion protection for a huge range of packaging needs including military and ammunition, clothing, rubber, mechanical components, museum artefacts - any goods which are perishable or need protection from air-borne oxidants.

"Another advantage is that Intercept looks and acts like copper in that it loses its lustre and starts to go grey when it is coming to the end of its life span. This performance self-indication is extremely useful when judging how long components can remain in storage before deterioration eventually begins."

Melvyn Mabbutt concludes: "Bux Corrugated is very excited about this product as it is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. It has huge potential, especially in today's electronic age and we are looking forward to demonstrating its incredible capabilities."
